Description

[CIVIL RIGHTS] Flyer addressing integration of Baltimore's Riverside Park Swimming Pool in 1962.

Hey Sam, I'm in a Jam! 11 x 8 1/2 in. printed flyer supporting Republican Caroline (Carrie) Ramsay for Congresswoman, 7th Congressional District, Baltimore, MD. With additional text below, "This was the cry of the Negroes at The Riverside Park Swimming Pool. Where was Samuel Friedel? What did he do? What did he say? He is supposed to be your congressman. / Now He Wants Your Vote for Re-Election, Put Sam in a Jam..." With quote in lower margin, "The People's Welfare, Instead of Partisan Politics."

Issued by the City-Wide Democratic Club of Baltimore, this scarce flyer/poster was produced in 1962, following an incident in which violent crowds gathered at Riverside Park in South Baltimore to threaten Black swimmers and resist the integration of the pool in defiance of city policy.

[With:] 2pp. typed press release promoting Caroline Ramsay, Seventh District Candidate for congress, with information about Ramsay's personal and professional life below, followed by key components of her "main program," which includes "Civil rights and civil liberties transferred from written constitution to daily living." Page 2 compares Ramsay's record with that of her opponent, Samuel Friedel, and features commentary about him being silent in response to several incidences, most notably..."when his Negro constituents suffered threats at Riverside..."

Together, 2 items.
